Bribing Backlash

Today, I read an article that disturbed me. It was about an attorney who bribed officials in exchange for visas and/or citizenship. How many times have you heard a joke pertaining to sleazy lawyers? How many times have you cringed at the unforgiving behaviors of an attorney? Most of the time, these puns refer to a defense attorney… the lawyers who help YOU when you get in trouble. Yes, they are ruthless, but they act that way to help you get back to your life. As an attorney myself, I’ll admit to laughing at those lawyer jokes. This time, however, I felt ashamed to see a seemingly respectable colleague resort to deception to gain a client.

Check out the NBC article: http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/LA-Attorney-Immigration-Scam-Bribes-206707551.html

In a nutshell, immigration lawyer Kwang Man Lee is accused of paying bribes to government officials in exchange for US citizenship. The bribes ranged from small amounts of cash, as low as $50, to a staggering $10,000! The article alleges that he used international round trip plane tickets as a means of buying off these corrupt officials as well. As a result of the exchanges, (soon-to-be former) counselor Lee, bought citizenship for upwards of 35 clients.

As an immigrant myself, I understand the struggles of coming to this country. I’m sure these deals enticed many of his clients. Can you imagine the conversations in his office? “I know a few guys who can get you in…. for a price of course.” It’s almost reminiscent to a two-timing cartoon character, twisting his mustache as he cons his prey. As the saying goes, “If it smells like a rat…”.

Knowing local Judges and Prosecutors can definitely help your case. Being in court daily, I have had the privilege of making great relationships with several of the District Attorneys and have come to admire and respect many of the adjudicators.  However, these relationships alone are not enough to handle your case. Analysis and lawyer work are the actual life savers and right protectors. Be VERY weary of the attorney how exploits his relationships with public officials, especially ones who claim to have undue influence. It doesn’t take much to know that this is against the law.
